Physical science with my toddler!

We were getting so tired of all those snow storms here in the east part of the US, so we decided to just relax and have some fun learning with all that snow out there. Everything started as a painting activity and maybe some indoor snowmen, but we were so interested about how salt can change the state of matter of snow from solid to liquid. The easy way for my toddler to understand out little experiment was: “Lets see what happen to snow if we put some salt over it”….of course for my sister and I, which grow up on a very warm and beautiful island, our experiment was more like: “We have different kind of salt, so which one would change the state faster?

Therefore, here is our Don’t get bored experiment:

1- Send the only one who was able to walk and don’t get distracted outside to pick up some snow.

(They only difficulty was that she couldn’t open the back door with all those thing on hand plus she didn’t know how to turn the key…too funny! I almost had to go down stairs to open the door for her.)

Experiment table set up:

1- Iodized salt

2- Kosher salt

3- Outside salt (found it on the street)

4- Cooking sea salt

We described what we were doing and how was the snow….

As you can see after 20 minutes there wasn’t too much left….We result the fastest one was sea salt….(we tried to put the exact amount of each salt on each snow bowl…1 tbsp.)

Our goal: As you can see, Pinky was so amazed that instead of snow now there was “agua”- water!…

Great learning time!

A mommy’s reward!

Just a quick post to share with you what a great reward I’ve received today.

I was preparing breakfast, with Pinky next to me as always, and then she hug me very hard and with a huge smile said: Oh mommy! I love you because we’re best friends!

I almost cried….like a baby….those are the best words ever! I didn’t know about her new words best friends…maybe saw it on her cartoons….but that was a great surprised….also she used her favorite world right now: BECAUSE…..everything she says is followed by because….lol

I love this age….I can have truly and meaningful conversations with my little best friend!

She is really into cook!

On these days, Pinky (31 months old) is very interested into cook…every time I have to prepare a meal she is right there next to me calling for her stairs and yelling: “I can’t reach it!”.

This is something a little bit overwhelmed to me, because:

1- She is still in her age when she gets so excited that she is not listening and get distracted so easily.

2- I am soooo afraid that she could get burn or hurt…so is very stressful for me to have like 20 eyes around…..two checking what I am cooking…and the rest on Pinky.

3- I know that she has the disposition right know and the interest into cook, so I don’t want to tell her she can’t help and later affect her in some way….like getting afraid to ask because she thinks would get a no for answer…(I said it for my own experience!) although is normal to have no’s as answers….

4- My kitchen is just what you see on the photo….a kind of rectangle shape space….I don’t have place to cook comfortable!

Also, I got bad comments from my sister for letting Pinky to help….she thinks that kids can’t stay on the kitchen while adults are cooking….I think she gets more stressful than me! lol

Therefore, most of the time….here is Pinky next to mommy helping to prepare the meals….and she really enjoys it and…the best…she eats her food without problem because she was the one who cooked it…..uffff…and you can see how proud she feels of her self!

Marlee 30-31 mo 238                              Would you like some pancakes???

So….at what age did you start letting your child to cook and…..did you feel the same as me?….did it got better with time?…..

Unto The Hills; a daily devotional by Billy Graham

I just want to start saying that this is such a HELPFUL devotional no matter in what stage of a spiritual life are you!

Unto the Hills by Billy Graham is a 365 day devotional. This is an updated (revised) edition which was originally published 25 years ago.

For each day of the year there is a verse of scripture, a short writing/meditation from the author and a prayer at the end. Everything is written just on one page, so I found it easy for a busy stay at home mom of a hyper toddler and a hard worker husband. Furthermore, it is so easy for reading and understanding that I can start my mornings with such a positive feeling (even that English is not my first language).

There are different topics covered thru the devotional, but my favorite ones were about wisdom, hope, marriage and family.

In these months I have been thru a lot of challenged experiences, but I am walking, learning and growing up with just a little of help of a daily positive message that I can find in this devotional.

As Dr. Graham states on the Foreword:

“We are made for the valleys of life. God will sometimes allow us a view from the hills, but only so that we might be refreshed enough to return to the valleys- where the action is- that we might be of service to Him.”

If you still don’t have a day by day positive message to help you, I highly recommend you Unto the Hills by Billy Graham.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson through their "Book Sneeze" program; however, my opinion was used in this review and was not influenced in any way! All thoughts are my own and may vary from others.

How do you feel?

If you put together a bored toddler, a mommy with no mobility, a lot of pain, and under the effects of some strong pain medications; and add an aunty whom isn’t used to expend her days with a cold weather and inside the house, you can end CRAZY!!! However, Pinky is in L*O*V*E with my beloved camera and looking at her pictures, so we decided to have some fun. What did we do? Just expressing some feelings! lol

This is such a great activity! We had lots of fun making faces, having a picture taken and finally appreciate our ART moment! So far, she gets so happy whenever she sees the photos. She is so good at making faces…..maybe I have a future actress!

If you try it, let us know so we can see how much fun you got!

Blessings!

A tough New Year- Pinky’s 1st fracture!

While the New Year 2011 started as a promised one….it turned out a hard one so far…but not for so long, that’s sure!

On January 17, 2011 was schedule my surgery, so we were very busy looking for some one to stay those days after the surgery with Pinky….at the end, my little sister decided to come and help us out…..(another hard situation later).

I had to do some pre-op test on the 4th (which I got concern the day before when I received a call from the hospital), went on a train adventure with Pinky, a stroller, 2 bags and myself….ufff….but we got lots of fun and learning on the way!

The day after, she was asking to have a play date with her little friend Ed….that day Pinky was acting out so badly…she didn’t listen, she was running inside the apartment, throwing toys everywhere, she got many time-outs…until….she was running again, felt, and started to cry like never before…..one of those types of cry very particulars that make you feel something is really WRONG!!!…I just examined her arm, looked for a scarf, bended around her body holding her arm to her chest and drove to the ER….and after some x-rays….(don’t worry…Pinky was just fine playing around and making conversations with everybody she found and singing her ABC’s and Tinkle, tinkle little star songs aloud.)

The results: It seems she broke the lower extremity of her humerus….but they were not 100% sure….so The three Kings day instead of the celebration I was planning….I was looking for a Pediatric Orthopedic….They put a cast on her arm and she was so excited to pick up a color….PINK!

It has been one month and almost 2 weeks from that and she still have her cast since the fracture is still healing…After the Pink cast, came the Orange one….and when mommy was so happy thinking that the cast was off…..ufff…we got a Brown cast for 2 more weeks….I know is excellent that she is healing very good and that the fracture wasn’t displaced, but…it’s so hard to bath her and change her clothes….mostly with a winter weather when she needs long sleeves to keep herself warm…..

Ok….lets see it on a positive point of view….She now understands why we can’t run inside the house….she’s is so happy practicing her colors whenever she have to pick up a new color cast, I have an excuse to don’t bath her very day she behave when I have to go to my therapies because she has a boo boo and needs to do exercises, too; and she is turning so good at pretending she is a doctor, an x-ray technician and a therapist….I am her patient!…and her daddy when he’s home, yupi!

This is Pinky’s first fracture story….are there more to come?….I hope not!   But, I think that maybe she is doing what she has to do, just been a happy, busy, and curious kid!

Marlee 30-31 mo 003 Just hours before her boo boo!….laughing as always!

Marlee 30-31 mo 011 First cast: Laughing as always!

Second cast: laughing and dancing as always!

Third cast: Always laughing!

Marlee 30-31 mo 237 Laughing in the face of adversity!

And that smile is mommy’s happiness!

Thanks for reading….and smile…it’s still FREE!
